Your Book Isn’t Selling: What You’ve Never Been Told

Today I'm delighted to welcome Mayor A Lan to the site - someone I met on Goodreads and who has some wise words to share with us all. I love the mantra of giving, and this post is all about that. Take it away, Mayor.   The joy of every Author, both indie and traditional, is to see their books sell in the thousands - if not millions. But this is not the case with most Indie Authors as many will go through the pain of writing a book, getting it published, and then watching as the show stops with nobody buying or reading. But why will your book not sell? This is why:   1.Starting Out, Nobody Knows You: This is the case for every Self Published Author. … Read More »

Today I'm delighted to welcome Ben Galley to the site, a fellow indie author who's making great strides in the self-publishing world. It's a pleasure to have him share his input, so let's see why he self-publishes. Over to you, Ben.   Self-publishing is a powerful buzzword at the moment. It’s on the lips of authors, readers, publishers, and writers alike. Even the average Joe or Josephine on the street, wandering through the bookshop, will be curious what all the fuss is about. You can imagine, then, how many times an author like me, an author who’s often out and about signing books or giving talks, gets asked the above question! Being asked so many times, you get thinking … Read More »

Today I have a guest post from Sarah Levy, a small business blogger. She comes to us today with advice for young entrepreneurs, and although her words are aimed at American based businesses, the same premise can be taken across the world. I know England has many similar schemes, and I'm sure most other countries do, too. Over to you Sarah:   Getting started in business isn’t easy, especially when you’re young and funding is minimal. But help is available from the federal government for young entrepreneurs looking to get their foot in the door. The Young Entrepreneur Series (YES) is an initiative by the White House and the U.S. Small Business Administration … Read More »

Today I'm delighted to welcome a guest post by Wise Ink woman of mystery, Dara Beevas. I was recently lucky to speak to Dara about her new book, The Indie Author Evolution, and she kindly agreed to follow it up with a guest post. This is it. Enjoy... I recently had an author in my office (let’s call her Angela) who wanted advice about driving traffic to her website. Angela’s book at the time was about two weeks from launch and with her blog underway, she wanted to know why no one was reading it. Amy, my colleague and fellow Wise Ink blogger, had already mentioned to Angela our success using Twitter as a tool to help grow our blog. Angela was hearing none of … Read More »

I'm delighted to welcome a Guest today as Jeet Banerjee takes us on a road of startups and capital. I'd like to thank Jeet for taking the time to write this post and hope you take some tips from it. Over to you, Mr Banerjee   A common myth many entrepreneurs seem to believe is the necessity for capital to create a startup company. Having capital to use for your business idea from the first day is great, but a lot of us don’t have the money necessary to get started. Instead of throwing your ideas in the trash, hear me out and see if any of these tips help you create a startup without capital.   1. Partner Up Entrepreneurship is a team sport. You need a team with varying skills … Read More »

[box] I'm delighted to introduce the lovely Laura Dennis to you. Laura is a regular voice on here and I'm lucky to have read her new book. I suggest you do the same... Over to you, Laura [/box] In Your 1st Step To Selling One Million Copies, Matthew asked, "How do you do it? How can you become the next ... dare I say, Fifty Shades of Grey?" It's an intriguing question, one I recently asked myself. I'm so pleased to be guest posting at Turndog Millionaire, and I may have a slightly shocking answer. Two words for you: Fan Fiction I know, I know. Fan fiction is derivative. Real writers don't write it. You can't actually publish fan fiction because of copyright issues. Blah blah blah, I … Read More »

Yeah Twitter might be great, but what about actually speaking to people face to face? Is it so horrible to imagine? Are we so socially awkward the idea of shaking a hand makes our stomach turn? The online world is great, but author marketing still needs some real world networking and that’s exactly what we’ll look at today. Welcome back to the How To Build An Author House Series. Today I leave behind Social Media and its many forms, and turn my attention to PR (Personal Relations) and general networking based activities. This includes everything from Conferences to Guest Blogging, and Stumbleupon to Newspapers…so sit back and get ready to make some notes. I’m really happy to … Read More »

Is Podcasting dead? Some people would argue it is with the ever-growing video landscape. However, there are still thousands of people Podcasting, and quite a few notable folk who use it as part of their author marketing. In fact, some people can attribute Podcasts to the success of their author platform; so surly the thought of such a platform dying is crazy. My guest today is certainly one to argue for it, and I’m excited to hear his thoughts on a subject he knows a great deal about. Welcome back to the How To Build An Author House Series. I’ve had a few weeks off from this series to get 2012 SXSW out of the way, but I’m back and raring to go. Today I’m delighted to welcome Jim … Read More »

Will Google+ be a game changer? It may soon become part of every Bloggers life, whether they like it or not. Welcome back to the How To Build An Author House Series. Today’s discussion goes to the webs new boy, Google+, and how it may become a daily part of all of our lives. I’m personally not a huge fan of Google+ and didn’t plan to include it in my own author marketing activities. As I’ve said previously, Everything Needs A Purpose, and I couldn’t see what Google+ offered my author platform. This has, however, changed largely due to its impending impact on SEO. This means Google+ now has a purpose in my author platform, something I will discuss at the end of this post. I would … Read More »
